Documentary

What is a documentary?

A documentary often consists of a moving image and plenty of images to show what life is like and from a point of view of someone. There is often voice overs to tell you what is happening. This is so that you are not confused.

Paragraph one

They key features of expository documentaries. An expository documentary is mainly from a point of view perspective. They will often be narrated over and be very much from the opinion of one person, so take that into account. The narrator will often speak to the viewer too. The dust bowl is a good example of an expository documentary. This was about the drought of America in 1930.

Paragraph two

The key features of an observational documentary are eschew interviews, voice-over narration and a soundtrack, and instead present footage of real life as it unfolds. A good example of this would be hoop dreams made in 1994. The documentary focuses in on African Americans playing and coping with basketball.

Paragraph three

An interactive documentary is a documentary production that differs from the more traditional forms of video, audio, photographic, by applying a full complement of multimedia tools. The user is able to modify their journey through the documentary based on their responses. An example of this would be 18 days in Egypt, it was a film about the 2011 Egypt revolution. The access and privacy can affect a production because it can set your filming back if you don’t have the correct documentation.  The film company can be possibly fined for this.

Paragraph four

The reflexive documentary mode focuses on the relationship between the filmmaker and the audience, pushing viewers to reflect on their perceptions and re-analyse their notions of truth. An example would be A man with a movie camera made in 1929.

Paragraph five

Performative documentary films focus on the filmmakers' involvement with his or her subject, using his or her personal experience or relationship with the subject as a jumping-off point for exploring larger, subjective truths about politics, history, or groups of people. An example of this is Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (1994).

Conclusion

My documentary is an observational documentary. That is because I include an interview of my mum. I think the presenter/documentarist has a contract with the viewer because we can engage the viewer with hard facts.
